Before we discuss the most common eye problems and provide professional advice, let’s start with a brief summary of the structure and functioning of the eye. The macula is an area of approximately 6 mm in size, occupying the central part of the retina, i.e. the place of sharp vision. The retina transmits the image reaching the eyes from the object to the brain. The macula is the area we use mainly when reading or working with something close to our eyes.
Due to the aging of the population, the incidence of macular degeneration in older people is constantly increasing. In some families, the prevalence of macular degeneration goes back several generations. However, many factors influence the development of the disease, including: various environmental factors, diet, UV radiation. In developed countries, 50% of severe vision loss is caused by sclerosis of the base of the eye. The first symptom is usually a bending of previously seen straight lines. This happens when reading ability and facial recognition deteriorate. In turn, it may be difficult to estimate the distance or exact size of an object, as well as the ability to distinguish different shades of color. After the disease has fully developed, we will see a large fog in the center of our field of vision, and we will only see sharply on the periphery.
In the case of “dry” form of macular degeneration, we usually recommend a preparation containing the most important substances for the eye, e.g. vitamins (vitamin A and C). Although we cannot expect vision to be restored, its regular use slows down the rate of progression of the disease.
At this point, it is worth summarizing what substances can have a beneficial effect on the health of our eyes. The first and perhaps the most important “eye-protecting” substance is lutein, which is found in high concentration in the macula of the eyes. Lutein is believed to provide protection against strong light rays. The second such substance is zeaxanthin, which is also essential for vision. These two substances are also called vision guards. Vitamin A is necessary for the construction of visual violet (rhodopsin), the light-sensitive substance of the retina. Its deficiency in the early stages causes the so-called night blindness, when dusk or poor lighting cause visual disturbances. There are certain plant-based active ingredients that are also excellent “eye protectors.” Reports show that British pilots during World War II ate handfuls of blueberries before night flights because the substances they contain help in the rapid regeneration of retinal cells. Blueberries contain fruit acids, tannins, vitamins, flavonoids (mainly anthocyanosides), a lot of iron, as well as vitamins A, D and C.
