Organic cosmetics – say no to parabens

#Organic #cosmetics #parabens

We can find many cosmetics on the market that, instead of taking care of you and your body, are intended to generate the highest possible profits. Their compositions often contain minimal amounts of active ingredients and irritating substances that are not recommended for your skin. Products advertised as natural, ecological cosmetics often contain small amounts of the advertised substrates, and mass production often does not allow maintaining the 100% biologically active form of plant active compounds. Most of the offered creams and shampoos promoted with slogans about the excellent effects of, e.g. aloe, contain little of it themselves, and instead offer a lot of fillers produced in the petrochemical industry. It is also impossible to avoid products containing various parabens. Currently, they are used in the production of almost 85% of all cosmetics. These compounds are mostly responsible for many allergic reactions.

The ubiquitous cheap Sodium Laureth Sulface

Deceived by extensive promotional campaigns and expensive advertising, we buy products and do not notice many parabens or surfactants in the composition. One of the “ubiquitous” compounds is Sodium Lauryl Sulface (SLS). It is found in cosmetics such as dog shampoos, human shampoos, mouthwashes, toothpastes (including those for children without fluoride), make-up removal tonics, and almost all gels and soaps. It is also the main ingredient of dishwashing liquids and agents for cleaning electromechanical devices. In a word, everywhere. And it doesn’t matter whether it’s a person, a child, an animal or a machine.

SLSL is an ingredient with strong drying and irritating properties. A milder form is the SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulface) version, but this does not change its negative properties because the principle of operation is the same. This compound, used more often (because it is milder) in the production process, is often contaminated with a compound called 1,4-dioxane – a toxin that is believed to be carcinogenic. Why are these substances used so often and why is it very difficult to find a product without these ingredients (or derivatives) on store shelves? Because it is extremely cheap to produce and … in the case of shampoos, soaps and others – it foams well. Often, “milder” cosmetics, e.g. for children, despite avoiding many substances, still contain one – SLES. It is almost impossible to eliminate this ingredient in cheap products. This would involve a significant increase in the price of goods.

By purchasing the so-called ecological cosmetics, it is worth paying attention to other compounds included in this group:

  • Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate
  • Laureth7
  • Cocamidopropyl Betaine
  • Lauryl Glucoside

.

Sodium Lauryl Sulface – impact on health?

There are opinions about the carcinogenic effects of the described compounds. SLS and SLES itself, as a pure chemical compound (without the mentioned impurities), do not have confirmed carcinogenic properties, but their action means that all other chemical compounds contained in cosmetic products, creams, shampoos can penetrate the skin much deeper. These ingredients, which are nothing more than detergents, remove the lipid layer, which is very important for the proper functioning of the skin as a protective layer against other harmful compounds.

Research carried out at the University Medical College of Georgia showed that commonly used SLS penetrates the body and is deposited in its tissues, while getting into the eyes of small children (these ingredients cause a burning sensation during bathing) may cause their damage, and in adults, faster development of cataracts. In cases of high sensitivity, Sodium Laureth Sulfate may cause extensive and confluent spots – lichen.

Natural plant sources?

It’s hard to imagine caring for your hair or body with a product that doesn’t foam. Even natural, ecological cosmetics must contain surfactants that remove impurities from the surface of the hair and skin. Such ingredients can be found in nature and one of the well-known ones is sodium cocoamphoacetate (sodium salt of coconut oil acids). This compound is classified as “green ingredients”. It is very delicate and gentle to the skin. It, as well as other natural, delicate ingredients (e.g. Lauryl Glucoside, Cocoyl Glutamate) are the basis of delicate branded and certified organic cosmetics!
