MYCOSIS IN THE BODY OF CHILDREN
Mycosis is an extremely common problem that mainly affects children. Fungi in the body cause numerous infections that may have more or less serious consequences. Fungi are present in the bacterial flora in our bodies, and they are also present in the environment in which we live. If our immune system works properly, we can deal with fungi without any major problems. However, if immunity decreases, various types of infections automatically appear because the body is not strong enough to fight them.
Mycosis in infants and children
Mycosis most often affects infants around six months of age. Then we introduce food to the baby, expanding the diet with new ingredients. So far, they have been drinking milk, which contains the right amount of antibodies. With new products, the amount of milk decreases, so the amount of antibodies also decreases. This is the time when the child’s immune system is not yet fully developed, because the toddler is just learning to produce these antibodies on his own and thus defend himself against infections. Fungi penetrate through the digestive and inhalation routes, in the mucous membrane, as well as through wounds on the skin. The fungus manifests itself, among others, with oral thrush or diaper rash, which can further contribute to the fungus’s penetration into the body. In the case of older children, the fungus penetrates mainly when the immune system is weakened. Although the child already produces antibodies and is able to defend itself, when, for example, taking antibiotics, certain medications or just after an illness, the body is too weak to cope. The development of systemic mycosis is also influenced by an improper diet, which is low in fiber and B vitamins and high in sugar.
Fungi in tissues and organs
Although the most common fungi that attack us are those that attack the skin, hair and nails, there are also types of fungi that grow in tissues and organs.
• The most common fungus is Cryptococcus. Infection occurs through inhalation or ingestion. Initially, the fungus develops in the lung tissue, and then is transferred through the blood to the central nervous system, and then to most organs and even bones.
• A very common fungus is the genus Candida, which causes a disease called candidiasis. Infection occurs by inhalation through the mouth, skin or damaged cornea. During surgery or invasive tests, internal organs may become infected with this mycosis. If the fungus is found in the blood, the consequence is the development of sepsis, which in extreme cases can lead to death.
What complications can fungi cause in children’s bodies?
Of course, the faster we act, the less dangerous the consequences are. Fungi may contribute to local atrophy of the oral mucosa and tongue. Proliferative oral yeast infection may appear, affecting the gums and tonsils and imitating cancer. Severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, itching and burning around the anus, and even cracking mucous membrane and skin around the perineum. Girls may develop genital candidiasis, which manifests itself as vaginal burning and itching as well as pain in the lower abdomen.
The first symptoms of systemic mycosis. How to recognize them?
The first problem is digestive system problems, because mycosis develops in the large intestine. Gas, nausea, bloating, and a very unpleasant breath odor. What’s more, the desire for sweets increases, because, as we know, mushrooms love everything sweet. If we quickly rebuild our intestinal microflora, we will not fight further consequences of this disease. However, if we ignore the problem, the fungus enters the bloodstream and attacks the organs. In such cases, inflammation of individual organs, rashes, allergies, and a greater tendency to catch colds occur. Ultimately, the central nervous system is attacked, causing severe headaches, problems with concentration and memory, mood swings, fatigue and depression.
How to remove fungus from the body – what does the treatment look like?
The basis is the use of a diet thanks to which we can remove yeast and toxins and through which we can rebuild our intestinal flora. We replace all simple carbohydrates with products rich in fiber – groats, oatmeal, vegetables and sour fruits. It is good to take a probiotic twice a year, which has a great effect on the intestinal microflora. Of course, we cannot forget about adequate sleep, quitting stimulants and practicing sports. If this does not help, it is necessary to introduce antifungal drugs.
One thing is certain, the treatment is a long-term condition in which you need to be patient to fight the fungi until the end. And let’s not forget about a healthy diet 365 days a year, not only when fighting illness.
