Why do we feel more tired when nature comes back to life
Spring symbolizes energy, regeneration and new beginnings. However, for many people, this period brings fatigue, lack of motivation or difficulty concentrating.
This condition is called spring asthenia and appears as part of the adaptation of the body and psyche to seasonal changes. Beyond the biological explanations, there is also an important psychological dimension, which influences the way each person goes through this transition.
Psychological mechanisms of adaptation to seasonal changes
In spring, the body and mind adapt to:
- changing the natural light rhythm
- increasing temperature
- changes in daily activities
This period can bring:
- slight decrease in mental energy
- concentration difficulties
- mood swings
- irritability or emotional sensitivity
- the feeling that daily activities require more effort
These manifestations are normal and reflect an adaptation process, not a psychological problem.
Asthenia vs emotional exhaustion and depressive onset
It is important to differentiate:
Spring asthenia
- occurs seasonally
- it is temporary
- the energy gradually returns
Emotional exhaustion
- appears after long periods of stress
- accompanied by psychic “consumption”.
- requires real recovery
The onset of a depressive episode
- persist in the long term
- loss of interest in activities
- the state of sadness becomes dominant
If the symptoms persist, consulting a specialist is recommended.
Psychological vulnerability factors
People more sensitive to seasonal transitions can be:
- prolonged stress
- professional overload
- with lack of sleep
- in major life changes
- with a tendency towards perfectionism or self-demanding
Asthenia can be a signal that the body and psyche need recalibration and restoration of resources.
Examples from psychological practice
- A client felt guilty for the lack of energy, believing that “in the spring I should feel full of enthusiasm”. In reality, he was going through a period of exhaustion after months of professional overload.
- A client notices restlessness and irritability for no apparent reason. The psychological analysis showed that the pressure of the projects and the change in the pace of activity demanded more of his emotional resources.
The examples show that spring asthenia is not a personal weakness, but a normal adaptation process
Psychological strategies for emotional regulation
- Accepting the adjustment period: don’t judge yourself for the temporary drop in energy.
- Movement and contact with nature: moderate physical activity and natural light support emotional balance.
- Sleep hygiene: a stable sleep schedule helps restore resources.
- Real psychological breaks: moments of mental disconnection prevent overwork.
- Observing emotions: the emotional diary or personal reflection helps to understand one’s own states.
Spring asthenia is a normal reaction to seasonal changes. From a psychological perspective, this period can be an opportunity to observe personal rhythm and the need for balance between activity, rest and emotional resources.
The moments of slowing down allow us to reconnect with our own needs and build a healthier rhythm in the following months.
